マルガリタ・マヴロミハリスの東京における初の写真展では、2019年から2023年にかけて作成された18枚の写真が展示されます。彼女は、自宅という舞台の中にビネット（vignettes）を慎重かつ正確に配置することで「内なる」現実を表現しようと試みています。 これらはコロナのパンデミックがもたらした心理的な閉塞感　―　外界からの孤立、日常生活の逆転、そしてコミュニケーションの欠落と自己との向き合い 、そこから生み出された深い内向性　―　を表現しています。

部屋の中でマルガリタは、思いやり、優しさ、そして驚きをもって自己観察をします。人間関係における孤独感、内と外の間の境界線、そして自己の多面性を探求します。彼女は常に自分の内なる空間を探しています。どんな環境や社会の制限を課されたとしても、私たちには生きる空間がある事を示しています。

マルガリタの写真のイメージは壁に囲まれている。それ故、彼女の家の限られた空間は太郎平書画院 展示室の限られた空間の中で、その意味をより深く理解することができます。

Artist’s Statement

有意義で誠実な作品は、自分自身の脆さを理解し、それを作品のインスピレーションとする事で産まれます。自画像とは、自分自身の探求です。過去と現在を深く掘り下げることで、本当の自分を見出すことができます。技術的にも感情的にも難しいプロセスではありますが、結果としては迫力のある作品は心のパワースポットで創造されます。

2020年は世界的な脅威が秩序を乱した心痛と不安に満ちた年でした。しかし、コロナのパンデミックは突然の、「時間の発見」という興味深いものでもありました。 時間は過去と現在を見直し、価値観と優先事項をもう一度深く見つめ直す機会を与えてくれました。 カメラの焦点を自分自身に向ける機会も与えてくれました。 この作品を通じて込められたメッセージの意味を、鑑賞者と共有できると信じています。

「インテリア スペース」は、はかない世界への憧れや、居場所のなさという心の奥底からくる個人的な探求です。私の孤独や憂鬱の感情を共有しています。それは人生の中心である人間関係に向き合うことであり、考えや信念、そしてその境界から自由になりたいという私の声なき望みなのです。

MARGARITA MAVROMICHALIS

1965年アテネ生まれ。代々外交官を務める家系に生まれる。若い頃から世界を旅し、人間こそがその国の「鼓動」であると感じ、世界中の人々のポートレートやストリート写真に情熱を注いでいる。 現在は夫が駐日ギリシャ大使を務める東京を拠点に活動中。

2011年から2014年までニューヨークの国際写真センター（ICP）で学び、2011年から毎年ガンジス川沿いにあるインドの聖地バラニシで、地元の人々を撮影している。また、過去10年間は、彼女が住み、訪れた都市の人々のポートレートを撮影してきた。コロナ禍には、セルフポートレイトのプロジェクトを開始し、2023年11月には初の東京個展を開催する。

Exhibition Announcement

This first exhibition in Tokyo of Margarita Mavromichalis presents a series of 18 photographs which she created between 2019 and 2023. She attempts to portray an ‘inner’ reality by arranging deliberate and precise vignettes within the setting of her home. These images express the psychological confinement resulting from the Corona pandemic: isolation from the outside world, reversal of daily life, and the resulting lack of communication and inward focus — which created a profound introversion.

In the interiors of rooms, Margarita performs her self-observation with compassion, tenderness, and surprise. She explores the loneliness in human relationships, the boundaries between outside and inside, and the plurality of the self. She is constantly searching for her own internal space. She shows us that we always have a space to exist, no matter what restrictions are placed upon us by the environment or people.

These images are confined within walls. For this reason, the closed spaces in an apartment can be experienced in the limited space of the TAROHEI GALLERY — which amplifies their context and meaning.

Artist’s Statement

The best way to create meaningful and honest work is to use our own vulnerability and let it be a guiding light and inspiration. Self-portraiture is an exploration of oneself. It digs deep into our past and present and often helps us to discover who we really are. It is not an easy process, neither technically nor emotionally. But the creation of this work is usually strong and speaks loudly because it comes from a powerful place: the heart.

2020 was a year marked by much heartache and insecurity. It was a year of global threat and instability. But for me, the most interesting element of the Covid-19 pandemic was the sudden discovery of time. Time gave us the opportunity to reevaluate our past and our present, and to rethink our values and our priorities. It gave me the chance to focus the camera on myself. It allowed me to create images that hopefully send a meaningful message to viewers who can then identify with them.

‘Interior Space’ is a personal exploration of deep feelings of displacement, a longing to belong to a world that is ephemeral. It shares my feelings of loneliness and melancholy. It is an exploration of relationships that are the pillars of our life. It is a silent inquisition into my thoughts, beliefs, and my eagerness to break free from those boundaries.

MARGARITA MAVROMICHALIS

Born in Athens (1965) to a family of many generations of diplomats. From a young age she has traveled the world and currently lives and works in Tokyo, where her husband is the Ambassador of Greece. She is passionate about portraiture and street photography around the world because she feels that human beings are the “pulse” of a country.

Margarita studied photography at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York from 2011 to 2014. Since 2011, every year she has photographed the local people in Varanisi, the holy Indian city on the Ganges River. For the past 10 years she has also photographed portraits of the people in the cities she has lived and visited. During the corona crisis, she began the project of self-portraits, which will be the focus of her first Tokyo exhibition in November 2023.
